ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN HARDMAN & CO

Gothic Revival Brooch

Silver & gold, enamel & green tourmalines

Diameter  4.25cm (1.67 in)

Origin British, c. 1875

A Gothic Revival brooch attributed to John Hardman & Co based on a design by William Burges.

Literature
cf. Charlotte Gere, European & American Jewellery 1830-1914, 1975, page 158 plate 152 shows the brooch executed by Hardman c.1880 based on the design by Burges, in the collection of the City Museum & Art Gallery Birmingham.
It has been suggested, on good authority that this brooch designed by Burges, was executed earlier than the Hardman version. Probably by Mackay, Cunningham & Co, Crown Goldsmiths to the Queen, 62 Princes Street, Edinburgh.
